You can buy travel protection up until the day before you leave on your trip. If you want coverage for pre-existing conditions, you will need to buy the insurance within 7 or 14 days, depending on the plan you purchase, of paying your initial deposit for the trip. You should bring a copy of the policy with you and put add the 24-hour hotline number to your cell phone contact list. A travel health insurance plan is definitely a must when traveling abroad because it will cover you for bouts of illness while abroad and emergency medical evacuation to an appropriate medical facility. Travel planning isn't just about packing the right things for your trip.
